Ein Vorteil der englischen Sprache ist der, dass es unzählige Möglichkeiten gibt, neue Worte zu formen. Die Wortbildung (word formation auf Englisch) umfasst mehrere Prozesse: Derivation bzw. Ableitung (einbezogen sind auch die Präfigierung und Suffigierung; z. B. quick – quickly), Kontamination bzw. Wortverschmelzung (z. B. breakfast + lunch = brunch), Komposition bzw. Zusammensetzung (z. B. girl + friend = girlfriend), Konversion bzw. Nullableitung (z. B. das Wort “import” kann sowohl als Substantiv als auch Verb fungieren), Reduktion bzw. Kurzwortbildung (z. B. laboratory – lab), Reduplikation (fifty-fifty), Onomatopöie (Nachahmung von Geräuschen und Lauten aus der Natur, Lautmalerei: burp, clink) und noch viele andere.
